Background

At Stafford Grammar and Prep School, our commitment to
supporting students with diverse learning needs has led us to implement
innovative solutions that foster an inclusive educational environment. One such
initiative is the integration of ReadSpeaker TextAid, a powerful assistive
technology tool that has significantly improved learning outcomes for our
students.

Hear from Jenny on the ease of integration of ReadSpeaker TextAid

As the Special Education Needs Coordinator (SENCO) at Stafford Prep School,
I have seen firsthand the transformative impact of ReadSpeaker TextAid on our students’ learning
journeys, witnessed how students have become more engaged and confident in class and
are motivated to tackle reading and comprehension tasks which would otherwise have been
very tiring for them. It is an invaluable resource, especially for those with neurodiversity such
as dyslexia. Dyslexia is the predominant need across our school. Giving the students this
support tool for their reading, writing, and revision means they are able to become
autonomous and it levels up the playing field keeping them on a level with their peers.

Before introducing ReadSpeakerTextAid, our experience with assistive technologies was limited and the
student user experience wasn’t ideal. We had used reading pens, which, while helpful, were clunky and
inefficient. After the COVID-19 pandemic there was an increased use of technology in daily classroom
activities and homework which prompted students to bring their devices to school, and it paved the way
for us to implement better tools.

How is ReadSpeaker TextAid used at SGS?
In the prep school, students primarily use ReadSpeaker TextAid for its e-reader capabilities. This tool
significantly reduces the mental load associated with reading comprehension tasks. By enabling students
to listen to the text, ReadSpeaker TextAid allows them to focus on understanding and interpreting the
material rather than expending their energy on decoding and the reading process itself.
For students with dyslexia, this reduction in mental load is crucial. Reading can be an exhausting task,
often leaving little energy for comprehension and response.
TextAid alleviates the reading burden, allowing students to demonstrate their true capabilities without
being overwhelmed by the mechanics of reading
As students progress to the grammar school, their use of TextAid evolves to meet their changing needs.
In addition to its role as an e-reader, TextAid becomes a crucial revision tool. Students can download
lesson content or online resources and use the e-reader functionality to review the material as many
times as needed, creating a personalized learning experience. This flexibility allows each learner to tailor
their study methods to their unique needs.

What one student at SGS has to say about TextAid
TextAid has made me more willing to work and more confident to work independently. When it
reads it to me, it helps me pick out the information from the text instead of me reading it. When
I’m having it read to me, I can take it in a lot better. I knew I could do it, but I didn’t know how, and
now I can, it makes me happy and I can get the work done a lot quicker. Testimonial Student at

Long-term benefits
One of the standout benefits of ReadSpeaker TextAid is its continuity. Students retain their ReadSpeaker
TextAid logins throughout their time at prep school, grammar school, and even into higher education. This
consistent access supports the development of good learning habits, ensuring that students can become
independent learners. Beyond education, ReadSpeaker tools are just as impactful in day to day
communications such as text messages, emails and even interpret image text.

Conclusion
The integration of ReadSpeaker TextAid at Stafford Grammar School has profoundly enhanced our ability
to support students with diverse needs. By reducing the cognitive load associated with reading,
ReadSpeaker TextAid enables students to focus on understanding and engaging with their coursework,
leading to improved academic performance and increased confidence. As our students continue to grow
and develop, it remains a vital tool that supports their journey towards becoming independent, successful
learners and reach their full potential.
