World Poetry Day: Lessons and Resources from Discovery Education

As World Poetry Day approaches, Discovery Education is providing primary schools with dynamic digital resources and complete lessons to bring poetry teaching to life for all pupils.

Available via Discovery Educationā€™s award-winning Espresso learning platform, this new, high-quality content is closely mapped to the National Curriculum for English from EYFS to KS2. Discovery Education is the worldwide edtech leader whose state-of-the-art digital resources nurture curiosity and drive deeper engagement.

Taking place on 21Ā March, World Poetry Day is an annual UNESCO event, which promotes the reading, writing and teaching of poetry. Featuring well-known poets such as Benjamin Zephaniah, Spike Milligan, and Childrenā€™s Laureate Joseph Coelho, Discovery Educationā€™s World Poetry Day resources will inspire pupils to discover, share and enjoy many different types of poetry, from traditional rhymes to free verse and dub.

The resources include:

  • Poetry Videos: Lifting poems off the page for young learners to enjoy
  • Short Poems: For reading aloud, with classroom discussion prompts
  • Poetry Activities: To help children discover and understand a wide range of poems

Lizzy Lambley, Discovery Educationā€™s UK Head of Production said:

ā€œPoetry is a key part of the English National Curriculum, and it can also benefit childrenā€™s mental health, cultural awareness and self-expression. Discovery Education is proud to support World Poetry Day by providing teachers with engaging resources that unlock the power of words and give children a deeper grasp of the possibilities of language.ā€

The World Poetry Day resources are available to Discovery Education subscriber schools via Discovery Education Espresso, the curriculum-centred daily learning platform, which includes a whole range of poetry resources and activities, for teaching throughout the year.
