The switch to evidence-based education: its impact on schools, universities and their suppliers

Half-day seminar from the Education Media Centre: 11.30 - 3.30pm

BESA headquarters, 20 Beaufort Court, Admirals Way, London, E14 9XL

Friday 15 September 2017

This important and timely interactive seminar addresses the world lead the UK is taking in using evidence to inform government policy and practice across schools, colleges and universities and the impact that is having on the ground. To continue to be successful, education businesses need to understand this new evidence-based culture.

Your seminar hosts are:

Fran Abrams, Co-Chief Executive of the Education Media Centre. Fran has previously been education correspondent of the Sunday Times, the Sunday Telegraph and the IndependentFor 15 years she was also part of the reporting team on BBC Radio 4’s File on 4.

Wendy Berliner, Co-Chief Executive of the Education Media Centre. Wendy is a former editor of the Times Educational Supplement and former head of editorial for the Guardian’s online professional networks – including the Guardian Teacher Network, Higher Education Network and Guardian Students. She launched and edited a weekly education section and higher education magazines for the Independent and has worked as a director of GEMS education in Dubai.

The background

Public expectations of education are high and increasing school population combined with decreasing value in budgets mean that evidence-based or informed choice about the sourcing of effective products and practices for schools and higher education institutions is becoming increasingly important.

All this is set within a context in which advertising, PR and marketing is now frequently resisted or ignored by a better educated and informed public and media content that is sponsored but not influenced by businesses is more likely to be taken seriously.

What the EMC does

The Education Media Centre deals in evidence. It is an independent charity set up to improve public and media understanding of education research and evidence. It is staffed by highly experienced education journalists who work with the media and education academics daily.

What the EMC is offering

A half-day interactive small group seminar for businesses supplying the education market which will cover:

  • the move to evidence-based and evidence-informed policy and practice.
  • key areas of UK education research and policy development.
  • the importance of evidence in convincing education markets.
  • where to find the right research.
  • how to deploy your own evidence – blogging, social media.

Participants are invited to bring issues for solution- focused discussion. The aim will be for them to take away, relevant knowledge, evidence and skills to help education businesses work more effectively and productively with the UK education industry.
